Round Two of the high school baseball playoffs and Round Three of the high school softball playoffs highlight the local sports scene this week.

The Martin baseball team, sporting a 27-5-1 record, is headed north for this weekend’s Class 6A Area playoffs against Wolfforth Frenship. The Warriors are coming off of a sweep of their Bi-District series against Abilene, winning, 7-5 and 5-4.

Frenship (18-13), the runner-up in District 2-6A, had to rally to win the final two games of a best-of-three Bi-District series against El Paso Americas. The Tigers dropped the opener of the series, 3-0, before rallying to win the last two games, 9-4 and 6-1.

Game 1 of the series, to be played entirely at Hoskins Field in Wichita Falls, will be at 7 p.m. Friday. Game 2 will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, with a third game (if necessary) to be played 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2.

Lamar (18-15) will battle El Paso Socorro (23-10) in the Area round, after having to stage its own comeback in last week’s series win against Keller. The Vikings dropped the opener of the series, 2-0, before rallying to take wins of 5-0 and 2-0 on Saturday to advance.

El Paso Socorro, who finished third in District 1-6A, also had to overcome a first game loss to Midland Lee in the Bi-District round. The Bulldogs fell, 3-1, in the first game before taking the Saturday doubleheader, 7-2 and 8-3.

The series will begin at 4:30 Friday afternoon at Odessa High School, while Game 2 will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, with a possible third game slated for 11:30 a.m., both at Odessa High.

The softball regional quarterfinal features two of the best teams in Tarrant County. Martin (22-3), the champion of District 4-6A will battle Keller (27-4-1) the champion of 3-6A.

The Lady Warriors, who have won 21 consecutive games and haven’t lost since Feb. 23, eliminated Odessa High in last week’s area round in two straight games. Keller, the team that beat Martin in February, has won 12 straight games.

The Lady Indians, who eliminated Arlington in the Bi-District playoff, toppled Wolfforth Frenship, 15-4 and 13-5 in last week’s Area round.

The best-of-three series will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday at Keller High School, with the second game scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Crowley. A third game, if needed, would be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Keller.
