Martin, Arlington, Lamar head to football postseason
Mansfield, Mansfield Summit and Kennedale also extend their gridiron seasons
After 11 weeks of regular season action, six Arlington-area teams are headed for the high school playoffs this week.
The action kicks off Thursday night with a Class 6A Bi-District matchup between Lamar (5-5) and Haltom (6-4). The Vikings, who finished fourth in District 4-6A, will battle the Buffalos at 7 p.m. Thursday at Grand Prairie’s Gopher-Warrior Bowl.
The action then heats up Friday night with three other matchups between District 4-6A and District 3-6A. The Martin Warriors (9-1) will battle the Keller Indians (5-5) at 7:30 at UT Arlington’s Maverick Stadium.
Martin was the runner-up in 4-6A, and is the top Division I seed. Keller closed strong, winning two of its last three games to qualify for the playoffs.
The Arlington Colts (8-2), the third-place finisher in 4-6A, will open playoff action against, perhaps, the tallest task of any local school, Keller Fossil Ridge. The Panthers are 10-0 and own a win over Lamar in the season opener.
The teams will square off at 7:30 Friday night at Keller ISD Stadium.
Mansfield (9-1), the champion of 4-6A, will host Keller Central (6-4) at 7:30 Friday night at Mansfield’s Vernon Newsom Stadium.
Two other matchups had not been finalized as of Saturday night. Mansfield Summit (6-4) will take on Crowley (6-4) Friday night at Clark Stadium in Fort Worth, but the game time has not been set.
Kennedale, who easily won District 9-4A Division I, will take its 9-1 record into the post season against Carrollton Ranchview (5-5), the fourth-place finisher in 10-4A Division I, with a site to be determined.
