Local basketball teams resume postseason play
One girls team and three boys teams continue the playoffs this week
The high school basketball playoffs resume Tuesday night for the boys, and Thursday night for girls.
Mansfield Timberview, which has both of its teams still in the running, will send its girls team to San Antonio to try and defend its state championship. The Lady Wolves (39-2) and Region II champion, will play their State Semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Alamodome against Kerrville Tivy (33-6), the Region IV champion.
The winner will face the winner of the 8:30 semifinal between Amarillo and Temple in Saturday’s final, slated for 3 p.m. in the Alamodome.
On the boys side, three local teams are still playing and enter the Regional Quarterfinals Tuesday night.
Bowie (23-12), the runner-up in District 4-6A, will take on Odessa Permian (30-3), the champion of 2-6A, at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Abilene High School. Bowie eliminated El Paso Americas, 54-34, Friday afternoon, and Permian stopped Keller Central, 71-46, on Friday to reach the third round of the playoffs for the first time since 1998.
Martin (17-18) will face a familiar foe in its Regional Quarterfinal, when the Warriors take on North Crowley (30-5) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center in Fort Worth. The Panthers not only own the 4-6A title, they also own victories of 58-39 and 77-38 over Martin this season.
Martin downed Odessa, 65-56, Friday night in Abilene in its Area playoff, while North Crowley polished off Amarillo Tascosa, 77-56, on Friday.
In the 5A bracket, Mansfield Timberview will take on Midlothian in Tuesday’s Regional Quarterfinal at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at UT Arlington's College Park Center.
Timberview (29-6) edged Dallas South Oak Cliff, 50-47, in last week’s Area playoff, while Midlothian eliminated Dallas Woodrow Wilson, 49-39.
